: The Importance of Visiting Relatives with Alzheimers Disease
:
(414 Words)
It is not easy to visit a relative with Alzheimer’s Disease. It can be difficult to watch the changes that inevitably occur. Despite this, or even because of it, visiting with these relatives remains as important or even more so than ever. Consider the following reasons.
You can give your relatives happy moments
They might not remember your presence a few minutes later, however that does not mean that your time spent with them was of no value. Many small babies do not have a long memory either and yet still we play with them. Life is about the happy moments and this is something that you can give to your relative with Alzheimer’s Disease. They may be in a facility with many other people and not typically get the personalized attention that a relative can give to them. You can interact with them specially and do things that you know that they like. You can talk about subjects that they enjoy and may somewhere understand. Also, many people with Alzheimer’s Disease still recognize their relatives and your presence can be a source of comfort to them. They may still be able to have conversations. You can be a source of strength for them. Even if they do not remember you when you have left (and many will have some memory still remaining) they may just feel happier, which in itself is a powerful and worthwhile thing. It is a great gift you can give to them.
It is important for you
They may act differently than you remember, but that does not mean that parts of them are not still in there. Just because you cannot interact with them as you did before does not mean that you cannot still interact with them in a positive manner. Talk about the parts of your life with them, even if you know they won’t understand. Try to play a game of cards. Enjoy just holding their hand. Do what you would want others to do for you if you were in their situation. Rejoice that they are still there with you.
You may help to keep them in a better state for longer
Having stimulation can make a difference to someone. By talking to them and just being with them you might even help them with their abilities.
It is important to not just forget about those relatives with Alzheimer’s Disease. Consider the points above and be the relative you would want others to be.
