Tips for Avoiding the Winter Blues
(469 Words)
Many people are affected by the “winter blues,” or Seasonal Affective Disorder. For many, it is caused by a lower exposure to sunlight, whereas for others it is just about having fewer outdoor activities or the coldness. The following tips may help you avoid the winter blues.
Get outside into the light
If you have trouble being out of the sunlight, then get yourself into it. Although it is cold, you can still get outside. Bundle yourself up. Even sitting on your front porch or going for a walk around the neighborhood might be enjoyable. Try to take advantage of some of the fun outdoor activities that you can do during the winter such as ice skating at an outdoor rink or just playing in the snow with your kids (or your spouse). Try not to use the excuse that it is too cold to go out and do anything. Even if you do not feel like it, you may feel better once you get out and start to do things.
Some people may feel like they even need to take a small vacation to somewhere with a warmer climate such as Florida. They may find that even a small break in the middle of the winter can help refresh them and get them out of their “winter blues.”
Bring more light into the house
Some people feel better with just a brighter house. There are some lamps made to represent sunlight. This may make you feel more refreshed.
Connect with other people
You may feel more alone in the winter because it can be more difficult to go out and visit people. Try to get together with people despite the cold. Go to events and invite people over to your house. Call your family and friends.
Read books
You are not the only one who suffers from the winter blues. You may find that a book can help you avoid this problem or address it if you are already affected. You could consider Disorder by E. Rosenthal or Affective Disorder For Dummies by Laura L. Smith PhD and Charles H. Elliott PhD.
Take further action
If you know that you always get the winter blues and it can become serious, then you may want to get support. You can talk to others who have suffered or even go to counseling to help prevent it from taking over your life.
The winter blues can be difficult, but it is a lot about attitude. If you find yourself thinking about the bad things of the winter, then change your thoughts. Enjoy the fun things such as snuggling under a warm blanket with a steaming mug of hot chocolate. Remember that spring is right around the corner. The above tips may also be helpful in helping you to avoid this issue.
