When you are getting married, you will probably have everyone around you offering advice (whether you want it or not!). The most frequent advice you are likely to hear may be related to the importance of communication. The following are reasons why communication can make or break a relationship.
Communication can help us bond and feel closer to a person
A lot of feeling close to a person is communicating to them, either through words, body language or just touch. You may feel like you relate to a person. Positive communication can help fuel this closeness that can define a marriage. If you do not communicate, you may have difficulty feeling close to the person. Some people start to feel like they are married to a stranger, and this is what can ultimately lead to the demise of a relationship. Constant communication can help prevent this.
It can help avoid mistaken feelings
A lot of times arguments occur because of mistakes. For instance, let’s say that your spouse is acting very angry. You think that he is angry at you but you have no idea what you might have done. He doesn’t tell you anything so then you start to get mad at him. The relationship can suffer if this occurs often. Now let’s say that he wasn’t mad at you to begin with but angry about something that happened at work. He doesn’t communicate this to you, however, and then he see you acting frosty to him and now he really does get mad at you. All of this was a product of miscommunication. If the husband had just said at the beginning that he was upset about something at work, then the wife might have understood. Therefore it is important for people to communicate.
It can help avoid small problems from blowing up into major problems
Sometimes there is a small problem. Let’s say you are angry because your spouse always picks the movie and you want a chance. If you do not communicate this to her then you might just end up holding a grudge. If this happens about a lot of things then it can become a hallmark of your relationship and the entire bond can suffer. If you communicate and work these problems out through compromise, then these little seeds of disagreement can be smoothed over and they never get into anything big. It is important to communicate about things you are dissatisfied about in order to help keep your relationship in harmony.
Communication is vital for any marriage. The above reasons are why this can make all the difference.
