Is it a boy or girl? Up until a few decades ago, the answer was always a surprise of the birth, however now routine ultrasounds have given expectant parents an early glimpse into the baby’s gender. According to childbirth.org, you can typically find out the gender by 18 weeks gestation. Not all parents choose to find out, however. Parents cite various reasons for this decision.
They like to be surprised
Some parents simply like to be surprised. They may long for that moment at birth when they find out the sex of the baby. They may want the doctor to yell out “It’s a…” It can be something that will add to the birth process for them. Some consider it the biggest surprise of their lives and want it to stay that way until they meet their baby. According to American Baby Magazine, some parents find that labor is more exciting and even easier because of the distraction.
They fear an incorrect reading
Most of the time, late ultrasounds by an experienced technician will accurately predict the gender of the baby. They are far from foolproof, however, and some parents choose not to find out the sex of the baby because they do not want to take the chance of finding out incorrect information. If they start to plan for a baby of a certain gender and spend a lot of money and get gifts aimed at that gender, it can be a disaster if it is wrong. Waiting until the birth negates this risk.
They do not want to be disappointed
Although most parents will state that they simply want a healthy baby, many do feel a desire for a particular sex. Some parents choose not to find out the gender of the baby because they do not want to be disappointed during the pregnancy. It is far more difficult to be disappointed during the birth when you finally meet your bundle of joy, even if the gender is not what you hoped.
They do not want to gender bias
Some parents feel that they will only get gifts related to a specific sex if they tell everyone what they are having. They may not want the focus on a particular gender.
