Why People Lie when they don’t have to

You may be surprised at how many people lie. Some lie about only small things whereas other lie about big things as well. Some do it for the right reasons with so-called white lies whereas others do it for self-motivated purposes. Everyone has their own reasons or combinations thereof, and the following are some of the reasons why people lie when they don’t have to.
They want to look good
Sometimes lies can make you look good to others. People may lie to make themselves look more impressive such as saying they won an award they did not.
They are embarrassed about something
A lot of people do not have to lie but feel like they would be embarrassed if they do not. Perhaps they did something that they do not want to tell others about. They may feel like they will be teased if they tell the truth.
They do not want to hurt the other person
Sometimes lying is done for altruistic reasons. Perhaps they feel like a lie would be better than telling someone the truth. For instance, let’s say that your best friend asks you how you like her new dress. She is so excited about it. You think it is the most hideous thing ever to be made and should be destroyed immediately. Do you tell her this? Of course you do not need to lie, but in this case, it may be a kindness to do so. However, if you think she is the type of person who would want an honest opinion then the truth may be better.
It is a habit
Some people lie when they do not need to simply because they are accustomed to it. They may have started lying as a child (as many kids, too) but simply never stopped. They may feel like they are just exaggerating and not even realize that they are constantly lying. The lies may just come out, and then they may not know how to take them back without it being awkward.
People lie for many different reasons, even when they do not need to. Of course a lot of people lie because they do not want to get in trouble such as someone lying to their teacher or boss about something that they did.
