(417 Words)
Breastfeeding is important for your baby and for you. Many women start to do this, encounter problems and quickly stop. They may have others encouraging them to give up – even a pediatrician who is not fully aware of the benefits of breastfeeding might tell you to move to formula. The following are reasons why you shouldn’t give up on breastfeeding.
It can save your baby’s life
This may seem overdramatic, but the truth of it is that breastfeeding does save babies’ lives. There are many benefits to breastmilk and it can help keep a baby healthy. Babies who are breastfed just tend to do better, get sick less often and get better from sickness easier. Many organizations have literally found that babies lives could be saved if more people stuck with the recommended guidelines of six months exclusive breastfeeding and at least a year of continued breastfeeding (many places say to go to two years). Even if you feel like giving up, isn’t it worth it to try harder? Breastfeeding also helps the mother by reducing her risk of certain types of cancer.
Many people encounter problems, but most can get over them with enough time and effort
Many women will have problems when starting to breastfeed. It seems like this is almost more common than not. Some women will give up right away, thinking that they just cannot do it or do not make enough milk. This is rarely the case. Usually if you stick with it, you will succeed.
There is a lot of support out there
There is nothing that says that you have to go through this alone. There is a lot of support for breastfeeding mothers who are having difficulty. Many hospitals have lactation consultants who can help you while you are in the hospital and perhaps after as well. You might want to find out about these services before you have the baby and make an appointment to see them no matter what. Also, you can consult with one afterwards, either from the hospital or privately. There are also different breastfeeding support groups. The hospital may offer one or there is the popular Le Leche League. You will find information and support there to help you avoid having to give up. You will also find a lot of information in books and on the Internet such as on bulletin boards.
Breastfeeding is important and you should not give up unless you have absolutely no choice. Consider the above reasons for this.
