How to Politely Decline a Date
Declining a date may be almost as stressful as asking someone out on one. You may not want to hurt someone’s feelings but for whatever reason you just cannot say yes. Try the following tips for declining a date with grace and kindness.
Show that you are flattered
Asking someone out on a date is a big deal. No matter how unsuitable you feel that you are for them, you want them to understand that you truly appreciate their interest (obviously unless it is something completely inappropriate). You can thank the person. You can literally say how flattered that you are.
Clearly give a “no” answer
Sometimes people get very flustered when someone asks them out on a date, regardless of what their answer is going to be. You want the person to understand that your answer is no, in a polite way of course. You can say something such as “I am sorry, but I have to decline.” You can apologize if you would like. You should say it in a tone that portrays that you would like to but simply cannot. Make sure that it is easily understood as a no, but in a nice way.
Consider an explanation
The first thing the person is probably going to want to know is why not, and it is polite to give an explanation. You want to be very thoughtful when giving this reply. It is obviously easiest if you have a reasonable explanation such as if you are already with someone or if you will be moving away soon and do not want to get started in a relationship. You can also gently say that you just do not feel that you are right for each other. Make sure not to give him or her any put-downs or say any negative reasons why you do not want to date them such as you find them unattractive. Sometimes a little white lie can make them feel better and do no harm.
Avoid clichés
There are many of the stereotypical clichés that your would-be suitor probably does not want to hear. For instance, they may not want to hear the “It’s not you, it’s me” line. Be careful about saying something that they may have heard before.
Declining someone for a date can be sad for the person, and even for you. You want to be gentle and nice when doing it. You may also want to do it in the manner in which someone asked you. For instance, if someone asked you in person, do not tell him or her maybe and then send a text message with your decline. Show that you respect him instead. The above tips can help you give a polite negative response to a date request.
