(463 Words)
Many people suffer from mental health issues. It is important to take charge of them so that you can avoid some of the pitfalls that psychological problems can create. Consider the following tips for getting control.
Do the positive activities to keep yourself mentally healthy
There are certain steps that you can take to make yourself more likely to stay mentally healthy. First you should keep yourself physically healthy. If you are not getting enough sleep because you stay up partying all night then you may allow yourself to become more vulnerable. If you do not eat well, then it can be a problem as well. Of course excessive drinking can play a role in mental health. Many drugs can affect mental health so it is very important to avoid abusing drugs. You should not overwhelm yourself or let yourself get spread too thin (i.e. supermom who is working two jobs, PTA president, taking night classes, etc.)
Other activities can help keep you from getting mentally ill. Exercise has been shown to release positive hormones and perhaps help some people with mild depression. It can also help some who are anxious. Having a good social system and friends may also help you find out if there is a problem earlier and may give you someone to turn to.
Keep your thinking positive
Often people can tell when they start to have thoughts that are less than rational. For instance you may be starting to get depressed and start thinking about everything that is wrong. You may have an issue with body image and think about every morsel of food that enters your body. If you realize that you are starting to feel this way then you might want to step back. You can try to think different positive thoughts.
Read books on mental health
There are many books out there that you might find useful. These are on a variety of disorders and a lot of them have methods for taking control of your mental health.
Get further help
A lot of taking control of your mental health is knowing that you need some additional help and getting it. There is nothing wrong with going to someone to talk to about your issues. What’s more, if someone is helping you, then you need to be open to it. You can’t treat it like a joke. Go in with a positive attitude that it will help and stay positive. If someone is not working out for you, then change.
It is important to take charge of your mental health. Obviously some things are in the genetics but there are many cases of identical twins in which one person has a mental disease and the other is okay. You do have control – just take it.
