A bulletin board about Native Americans can help teach students about this important group of people. It can also be a great way to explore their unique culture. Consider the following ideas for crafting such a board.
Highlight the different Native Americans tribes
There are many different tribes throughout the United States, and the lifestyles vary widely. A bulletin board can focus on these, and discuss the differences in them. It can also talk about the history of the particular tribes, discussing where they came from and what the present is now like for them. This can be highlighted with pictures. How many pictures you have compared to how much writing will depend on the age and grade level of the children and whether they can read well.
Life as a Native American
You can use the bulletin board to show life was for a Native American in the past and/or in the present. Again, use pictures. You can show what the Native Americans used as homes in the past and how they live now. You can show pictures of what they ate as well. If you would like, you can talk a little bit about the dangers and conflict that they faced in an age appropriate manner.
The students may also be interested in the clothing that the Native Americans wore in the past and present. You can post up a miniature replica of some of the outfits or you can even put up something life-size if you are able to get it. You can show the different accessories they had as well.
Culture
You can use the bulletin board to show some of the unique practices of the Native Americans. For instance, you can show the types of dances that they did. You can even have a step by step explanation for doing a dance, which some of the children might find fun. You can talk about other aspects of their culture such as how children were raised and taught. This might be especially interesting for the students and allow them to relate better.
A bulletin board on Native Americans can be valuable to teach the children about this important group. You can use one of the above ideas or combine several of them. Make sure to make the bulletin board attractive with color, but do not make it too overwhelming. With a little hard work, you can make a very interesting display.
