: How Kids are Affected by their Parents Relationship

:
(442 Words)
In many ways, kids are affected by their parent’s relationship. A lot of parents do not understand the extent of what their children see and understand, and it is important to know that your actions with each other can affect them now and in the future. Although all children are different and the situation will vary, the following is a description of how kids might be affected.
The children may look to the parent’s relationship as the way a marriage should be
The best example of what marriage is like to your children is likely to be your marriage. If you have a harmonious relationship with your spouse, then your children are likely to think that this is the typical way a relationship should be. They may carry that with them and look for that when they ultimately get married, which of course is what you want. If you instead are always fighting with your spouse in front of your kids, then they may mistakenly think that that is the way it is supposed to be. This could set them up for unsuccessful relationships in the future.
They may learn to speak to other people in the manner their parents speak to each other
If you are always yelling at your spouse and speaking to him or her in a disrespectful manner, then you may unwillingly be teaching your children that that is the way you should talk to people. If you are always making fun of each other, then they might learn that as well. On the other hand, if you treat each other with respect and kindness, then these might be the attributes that your children pick up. Remember that no matter how much you tell your children to do what you say, the reality is that they usually will do what you do instead.
Your relationship can set the atmosphere of the house
If you are always fighting with your spouse, then the entire atmosphere in the house might be stressful. Your children might get upset by seeing these tumultuous exchanges. They may feel bad for one parent or another. You may be wasting time fighting with each other rather than spending quality time with the family. On the other hand, if it is a nice relationship, then that can set a positive atmosphere and your child might just be happier.
It is very important to be aware of your actions around your spouse when your child is watching. Remember that children are perceptive and can often see unspoken communication. The above points highlight just a few of the ways that kids can be affected by their parent’s relationship.
