Student Art Projects going Green
It is very important to teach students about the importance of “going green.” It may be a lesson that they can keep with them if they learn it when they are young. An art project representing this can be a great way to share this message. Consider the following ideas.
Make the art project out of recycled items
A lot of children know about recycling. You can let them actually do it themselves. The art project can be with an item that they previously used in the house. For instance, they can take a used plastic bottle to make a “ship in a bottle.” They simply need to take the plastic bottle (cleaned) and cut off the end and set it aside. They can then make a boat out of paper with different art supplies like crayons, markers, paints and embellishments like glitter. They can then put it in the bottle with some blue paper, beads or tissue paper to represent the ocean. They can then tape back the back of the bottle and cover it with paper so that it does not look like tape.
There are many other art projects with recycled items. They can take half of a Styrofoam egg container (again cleaned), stick in pipe cleaners in it and decorate it to make it look like a toy caterpillar.
Draw a picture of things you can do to “go green.”
You can have the children make an art project that is a drawing or painting of some green activities that they can do. For instance, they can show someone riding a bike or taking public transportation. They can show a picture of a hybrid car. They can show someone recycling or making other energy saving measures such as drying clothing outside on a line instead of using the dryer. They can also use different embellishments to make it a mixed media piece.
Decorate a box to use to collect items to recycle
The children may be able to use something like a shoebox to keep items that they will use over. For instance, let’s say that they get a lot of greeting cards that they end up throwing away. Perhaps they can use them in other projects, but they need somewhere to keep them and you can have them make a box for this purpose. They can cover the shoebox with construction paper and then decorate it as the art project with paints and glued on embellishments.
There are many art projects that can showcase the importance of going green to children. Consider the above ideas for your projects.
