53 Words: 9 Common Household Items that can be Dangerous for Kids

2432 Words: 441
Just about everyone knows to lock away guns, knives and matches from children. However, there are many common household items that can be dangerous for kids that you would not think to lock away. Many of these items can be very hazardous if the children get their hands on them, so it is important to keep these out of reach. The following are just a few of these items.
Shaving razor
Many of us keep our shaving razor on a shelf in the bathroom. Oftentimes, we may not even bother to keep it high. When you have a child, you may look all around the house, but forget to look in the bathroom for dangerous items. Obviously, a shaving razor is very sharp and a child can easily cut himself or herself. Children love to imitate and your child might try to shave as well. You will want to make sure that these are far out of the reach of children. Remember that kids can climb.
Vitamins
Most people know to put away the prescription and over the counter drugs away so that they are out of the reach of children. Sometimes people forget to include vitamins in this list, thinking that they are not dangerous. This is absolutely false. Vitamins are a major way that children overdose on drugs. Certain vitamins such as iron can be very dangerous to children if taken in large amount. A lot of vitamins might seem like candy to young minds. Make sure that you keep your vitamins away from the kids just as your would any other drug.
Household cleaners
Many people keep household cleaners in a cabinet under the sink. Unless you have a foolproof child safety lock, you may want to consider keeping it somewhere more secure. Many cleaners are brightly colored and may come in bright bottles with vibrant pictures. Children may mistake it for cool-aid, soda or another children’s drink. These cleaners can be extremely toxic if ingested.
Coins
Just about everyone has coins, and many people have a habit of leaving them all over the house. If you have a child under three (or an older child that still likes to put things in his or her mouth), then coins can be extremely dangerous. They are definitely choking hazard size. Be sure to keep these away from young kids.
There are many more items that can be dangerous to kids than those listed above. You should look around your house to see what items may be able to cause a problem. It is better to put something away than to take a chance and end up with a problem.
