Factors that Influence Driving Behaviors
Different people have different types of driving behavior. There are many factors that can influence such behavior, including the following.
How the person’s parents drove
A lot of people learn how to drive from their parents. If they watched their parents always drive carefully, then they may choose to drive carefully as well. If they always learned that you should cut people off and be aggressive, then this may be the behavior that they adopt. Of course, some people do the opposite. They may have felt scared with their parents’ aggressive driving behavior and thus chosen to be more careful now.
Their attitude towards driving
Some people are very aggressive when they are driving. They may get impatient and feel that they need to be somewhere as quickly as possible no matter what and drive towards that end. Others might be a little fearful of driving or simply just smart and want to be as defensive a driver as possible.
How others drive in the area
You might also pick up some driving habits from those around you. If you live in a place where everyone is generally calmer and nicer with their driving behavior, then you might follow suit as well. If instead you are in a place where people are more aggressive, then you might feel like you have to drive that way.
Driving instruction
If you have taken some driving instruction then your driving might be better or different. You may have learned better techniques. They will also usually encourage you to have safe driving behavior while in class so your driving might reflect that.
Age
Different drivers of different ages often show different behaviors. For instance, young drivers get in relatively more accidents. They may be more aggressive because they are excited about having a car and feel the “need for speed.” Older people who have more time are often more cautious. Oftentimes the same person changes as they age.
Past experiences
If you knew someone who got hurt in a car accident or if you were in one yourself, then you might be more cautious in the future. People often learn and will try to be more defensive drivers when hit with the reality that can occur. Also, as time passes you might just get better at it.
Every individual is different and displays different driving behavior. The above points show some factors that might influence this behavior.
