: Factors that Influence Behavior in the Classroom

(418 Words)
Many classrooms have a challenging learning environment because the children’s behavior is out of hand. This is far too common nowadays, and steps should be taken to remedy it. Before you can change things you need to be aware of what issues might be playing a part, including the following.
The teacher has clear rules
In order to behave accordingly, the students have to understand the rules. It is up to the teacher to make these clear. During the very first day of school, the teacher should go over these thoroughly. Many teachers give out a sheet to the students with these rules. They may be posted in the classroom as a reminder to the students.
Clear and effective consequences that are enforced
No matter what rules you have, the students may not behave if there are no consequences to the behavior. The consequences should be as clearly listed, ideally in the same spots as the rules. It is good to have a series of consequences, ranging from first or lesser offences through those more serious. The consequences should be well thought out and should be something that would actually deter the student from doing the behavior. Sometimes you will have to tailor a consequence to an offense but they should make logical sense.
It is vital that the rules are enforced on a consistent basis. If the child does the crime, they should do the time, as the saying goes. They should not be able to whine or beg their way out of it because then they will learn that you do not mean what you say. If you threaten something such as a detention, then follow through. You should not have to continuously ask a student to do something.
The teacher stays calm
It is important that the teacher stays calm. This will help the children behave. If you get excited, then the students may get more wild as well.
The teacher has interesting lesson plans that keep the students engaged
If the students enjoy the class, then they might be less likely to misbehave. They may participate with the class rather than act out against it.
It is vital to be aware of the factors that influence behavior in the classroom so that you can better control it and create the right learning environment. Remember that some behavioral tendencies are influenced by the natural personality of the child as well as their home life. The above factors are some that may also play a part.
