: Factors that may Increase Blood Pressure

:
(414 Words)
There are many factors that can increase blood pressure, and there are other factors which have a relationship but are not causal. The following are some of these factors.
Sodium intake
Many people find that their blood pressure goes up when they eat too much salt. Many people eat far more sodium than they realize. It is usually not the salt that you add to a cooked meal, but the salt that is hidden in a meal already. Oftentimes a single fast food meal will contain an entire day (or more!) worth of sodium. In many foods such as soups, pizza and salad dressings you might barely taste it yet it is there in full force. Even those who do not currently have hypertension should be aware of how much salt they are consuming. If you have to watch your salt, then you should keep careful track and follow all recommended guidelines.
Stress
If you are more stressed you may have higher blood pressure. It is important to try to stay calm and to deal with things in a rational manner instead of letting yourself constantly get worked up. Also, some people get nervous when their blood pressure is taken, which can produce a result called White Coat Hypertension. You may want to try some meditation and relaxation techniques to help control your pressure.
Medications
Certain medications can raise blood pressure including some over-the-counter cold medications. Be aware of the ones that might have this effect. Also, certain medical conditions might play a part as well.
Age
As people age they may have higher blood pressure. This is why it is important to keep checking your blood pressure. Even if you do not have it at one time you can still get it as you grow older.
Weight
If you are overweight, you may be more likely to have higher blood pressure. Some people are especially sensitive to this. Keeping your weight under control may help.
Lack of exercise/activity
When you are more sedentary, your blood pressure may be higher. Those who exercise regularly may see lower numbers.
Many people have diagnosed and undiagnosed high blood pressure. Hypertension can raise your risk of many conditions including stroke and heart disease thus it is important to keep careful track of it. Home monitors are generally accurate and not expensive. In addition, many drugstores and other public places have machines. There are also many free screenings at various locations. Keep it under control for optimal health.
