When you are a grandparent, you are also a parent, and it can be a difficult decision when you feel like your grandchildren are being maltreated or neglected to the point that you need to call in child protective services. For most, the parent would need to be doing something truly extreme for you to feel that this is your only recourse. The following are some of these situations.
The parent is physically abusive to your grandchildren
If your grandchildren are being physically abused, then you might need to call in child protective services. This is not about them giving them a little pop on their tush. If they leave marks and bruises, broken bones or abrasions, then you may need to get help. Unfortunately many young children are seriously hurt or even killed by their own parents. Sometimes these problems start small, but when someone loses their temper and there is a small child involved, irreversible damage can be made in a matter of seconds. If you are raising your grandchildren then you might see these marks after they come home from their parents. Even if the parents did not do it, if it happened by someone else while in their care (such as a boyfriend) then it is still a problem. You need to protect your grandchildren.
There is sexual abuse
Sexual abuse can scar a child for a lifetime. If you see any indication that this might be happening while the parent is visiting or with the child, then you may want to call in child protective services.
Extreme neglect
The parent doesn’t need to necessarily be doing anything to the child in order for you to call in for extra help. Neglect can be just as dangerous. For instance, if you know that the parents leave a child who is way too young home alone, then you may need to call. If they leave them in the car for any length of time such as to run into a store, then that can be life-threatening.
Substance abuse issues
The greatest mom and dad in the world can turn into the worst when under the influence of a controlled substance. Whether they are an alcoholic or addicted to drugs and do not take care of the child when high you may need to call in to get extra help.
It is a big decision to call in child protective services against your child about your grandchildren. In some cases, however, it can save your grandchildren’s life. If you have no choice, you should do what you need to do.
