: How Parents can Promote Good Sportsmanship to their Kids

:
(408 Words)
It is important to teach good sportsmanship to your children. There are many ways to do this, including the following.
Show them that you have good sportsmanship
A lot of children learn best by watching their parents and then copying them. If you are playing a sports game and they are watching you, for instance, then it is important to show that you are a good sport. Do not be a sore loser when you miss something. Do not throw down your racquet or whatever sports equipment you have and yell and curse. Do not argue over a point. Do not get angry. Show that you are gracious instead. If a point is in doubt, then do it over to be fair to everyone. If you lose then take it with good humor. If the other person is being unreasonable then show that you are the “adult.” Show them exactly how you want them to behave.
In addition to showing good sportsmanship while you are playing a sport yourself, make sure to show it at any of their sports games. It is sad when you hear news stories of parents who got into fights at their kids’ little league games. Show them that you should always behave with class. Even if you feel that something is unfair show that there are positive ways to deal with it and negative ways. In many sports, people are penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct so you can actually stand to lose even more by displaying this type of behavior.
Talk to them about good sportsmanship
Sometimes the best way to teach children is to talk to them about it. Talk about how a sport is a game and it is important to always be respectful. Talk to them about why they should keep calm and how they will better enjoy the sport if they are okay with the outcome whether they win or lose. Obviously it is okay for them to be sad if they lose but it should not get to the point that they act out. Talk to them about how they feel when others do not have good sportsmanship and why they shouldn’t cause others to feel that way.
As your children partake in sports games, you should help lead them towards good sportsmanship. If they show it, then praise them. If they do not, then talk to them about it. With practice, your child will hopefully develop this skill.
