How to Foster Optimism in Children

Optimism is a powerful characteristic. It can make a person happier, no matter whether they are a child or an adult. It can even make them more likely to succeed since it can create a self-fulfilling positive prophecy. It is important to foster this in children because learning it early can help them keep it as they grow. There are a variety of ways to instill optimism in children.
Talk to them about the importance of being optimistic
You should talk to your kids about what optimism is and why it is so important to have it. Explain how they should expect the best instead of the worst. Talk to them about how it can lead them to try harder and they may be more likely to have a positive outcome if they do have a good attitude.
You can also talk to them about how to be optimistic. Tell them that if they are faced with a challenge that should say in their head or even out loud that they are going to do the best that they can on it. When up for a challenge, they should say I can do it.
You may also have to teach them about how to deal with failure if you truly want them to embrace the spirit of optimism. Obviously everyone fails at times. You may need to talk to them about not letting that change their optimistic attitude. Instead of saying that they will always fail, they should say that next time they will do better or they will succeed at something else.
Show optimism yourself
Many children do not necessarily listen to what their parents lecture to them but they will watch what they do and emulate their actions. If you tell them to be optimistic but then are pessimistic yourself, then they may learn to follow your behavior and not your words. Show this optimistic attitude.
Give them opportunities to succeed
It may be difficult for a child to feel optimistic if they feel like they are always failing at things. You may want to put them in something at which they can succeed if they are having difficulty with this. For instance, if they are not academically inclined, then perhaps you could put them in a sport in which they may excel. Seeing that they can succeed in something, they may be more likely to adopt an optimistic attitude.
Optimism is important for children. Utilize the above techniques to foster this characteristic in your little ones.
