(445 Words)
Are you on a tight budget? With the troubling economy, many people have now found themselves in this situation. With less available money you may have to cut your spending to work within your budget. The following tips can help you accomplish this.
Save money on food
Food is a cost that just about everyone has. There are many ways that you can spend less on this budget item. Instead of name brand items you can switch to store brands. Scour the Sunday ads for coupons that can cut the prices of the food items that you like. Look for places that charge less for food such as Costco or Target. Consider whether you are throwing out any food. For instance, if you always throw out half a loaf of bread every week, then as soon as you buy it take half and then freeze it. You can thaw it and spend half on your bread.
Going out to eat is almost always more than eating the same item in. You might want to cook more. If you do need to go out to eat look for cheaper places, early bird specials and deals like kids eat free. Instead of buying television dinners you can make your own by freezing food. You can look for sales at grocery stores and stock up when you see one that is good.
Save on transportation costs
If you are a two car family you can save a great deal of money by switching to one car. Look at public transportation and carpooling options.
Save on activities
Just because you are on a tight budget doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun. However, you may have to change your activities. Instead of spending ten dollars a person to go out to the movies, rent a DVD for $1 at a Blockbuster Express kiosk. You’ll also pay less for the popcorn and soda! Do free activities like parks. Oftentimes cities have free entertainment, which you can choose instead of pricey concerts in halls that cost $30 a person. Instead of going to a pro sports game that is twenty dollars a seat, go to a minor league game that is just a few dollars.
You should look at all of your spending. Before you buy anything, truly think about whether you need it and whether you have anything already like it. Try to cut down on unnecessary spending on clothing, jewelry, etc. If you don’t watch cable, then why pay for it? Go through your budget and see if any of the spending can be reduced, even if temporarily. Also try the above techniques to help you cut your spending.
