: How to Teach your Toddler to Pick up their Toys
:
(407 Words)
The earlier you can teach your children to pick up their toys, the better. There is no reason not to start while they are toddlers, and there are some great strategies that you can employ in order to teach this important lesson and bring order back to your house. Consider the following ideas.
Teach by example
It is best to keep a neat and tidy house for your toddler. He or she will learn that this is the right way that it should be – with everything in its own place. Also, when you are done with something, put it away. You can talk to your toddler, who probably understands more than you think. You can say “Look, Mommy is done with this, so I am putting it away.” You can also have him or her help you clean.
Do not let them play with another toy until the old one is away
Some people want to keep very good order in their house and one way is to teach your toddler that they cannot pick out another toy until the one they were previously using is back in its place. If they start to pick up another toy, then gently say no and lead them back to the old toy, showing them where to put it.
Make it a game
You can turn clean up time into fun time. You can quickly put the toys away, laughing as you do so. He or she might think it is a game and try to help you.
Dance and sing while cleaning
Another way to make cleaning fun is to sing and dance while doing it. There is a fun song called “Clean up, clean up, everybody, everywhere, clean up, clean up, everybody do your share.” You can sing this while cleaning. You can even dance around while you put things away.
Give positive reinforcement
Every time your child picks up their toys, you can clap your hands and say “Hip hip hoorah!” Make them feel proud that they did the right thing. They might want to do more of it to get your positive attention. You can also give them a little treat or surprise such as a little gift.
Teaching your toddler to pick up his or her toys can get you started on the right track and avoid the difficulties of teaching this to a much older child. Consider the above strategies to impart this lesson.
