Starting a Neighborhood Playgroup
A toddler playgroup is an excellent way for parents and children to meet new people and socialize. With the right steps, you can start your own toddler playgroup with people in your own neighborhood and create a network of strong friends.
Decide on the details
Before you start soliciting members for your playgroup, you should first decide on the details so that you can share these with potential members. Consider whether you want to create a standalone group or make a chapter of a popular group like Moms Club International. If you want to start a chapter, then you can visit its website for details on how to do so. Decide whether you will have meetings, and if so, where and how often. Decide on the types of activities you want to offer. You may choose to offer playgroups, trips to local attractions, park play dates, children’s shows and holiday events. Decide whether there will be any dues.
Find members
Once you know how you want to run your chapter, you will need to find members. Ask people you know in the neighborhood. If your child attends a preschool, you can ask parents there. You can also post fliers in places that get a lot of parents such as a pediatrician’s office or business for children. Give all the details of the group and your contact information.
Create events
You will probably want to have an initial meeting once you get everything set up. Talk about how you will set up events. In many mommy groups, the members can “host” or create events. If a lot of people take on these roles, then it will be much easier, since all of the work will not fall upon your shoulders. Create a calendar so that everyone knows about the events. Look for free and inexpensive community events that you can put on the calendar.
Keep it Going
You want your playgroup to stay strong. An email loop is a great way to keep everyone informed about events. Also, schedule monthly or otherwise regular meetings. Continue efforts to attract new members since some members will leave as their toddlers “age out” of the playgroup. You can also make it more organized with a constitution and a board of officers.
A playgroup can introduce you and your child to new friends. With the right steps, you can make one in your very own neighborhood.
