Teaching English as a second Language Methods and Techniques

(417 Words)
Teaching English as a second language is a quest filled with challenges. Different methods and teaching techniques can be used in an instructional setting. Try a variety of strategies to help your students conquer their new language.
The power of body language
Body language can be utilized to portray words when there is a lack of communication. For instance, the most effective way to teach a student what the word “sneeze” means might be to make a little “ha-chew” yourself. Not only will this immediately portray your meaning to the student, but it is more memorable than simply utilizing words to explain it. You can use visual cues in addition to words. For instance, show different types of flowers when teaching the English words.
Utilize photographs, pictures and drawings
You will not always be able to use body language to portray the English word. For instance, pretending to fly around the room as a jet plane may not be as easy as simply showing a picture of a jet plane. The student can also hear the word at the same time that he or she sees it. This multi-faceted approach introduces the word to different senses therefore increasing the chances of memorization.
Utilize tools and resources
There are many different tools at your disposal. You can show English television programs. They may pay more attention to this. Computer programs are also an excellent way for students to learn English. Look online at websites such as English Club. Interactive programs such as Rosetta Stone have also been found to be very effective. Even simple flashcards can be very helpful.
Create interaction
Some students learn better when they are immersed in the English language. As much as possible, they should be conversing in English within the classroom. One exercise is to place the students into small groups. Ask that they talk either about a specific subject or just freely. If you are in an English speaking country, then tell the students that they should continue to do this outside of the classroom. You can explain the meaning of words as you go along.
Encourage homework
It is important for the students to continue their education outside of school hours. You can give out vocabulary tapes. Send out worksheets. The more repetition, the better.
Try not one but a variety of techniques to teach English as a second language. Multiple methods can work together in synergy and provide a more interesting and varied approach. The above techniques may be helpful.
