Tips and Tricks to Succeed at Writing for National novel Writing Month

National Novel Writing Month challenges writers to finish a 50,000 word (175 page) novel in the month of November. With an admitted goal of writing a piece of quantity more than a piece of quality, they allow the “winners” to submit the final products for verification near the end of the month. It can be quite the challenge to write such a lengthy piece in so short of time, and the following tips and tricks may be helpful in your quest.
Write every day
As difficult as it is to write a 50,000 word novel in a month it will be much more so to write it in two weeks. Thus you do not want to procrastinate. The best way to keep up might be to write every single day. You will get in the habit of it. You won’t get to the point that you fall so far behind that you feel like you cannot do it and give up.
Make smaller goals for National Novel Writing Month
It may be difficult to fathom the goal of 175 pages. Instead you can make smaller goals that may not seem quite as insurmountable. One simple way to do this is to divide 50,000 words by thirty days and figure you will write 1667 words a day or approximately six pages. This doesn’t seem nearly as bad, and if you can keep up with it, you might be able to accomplish this easily. You also might find it easier to break it up into goals by the week. You should work it around your schedule. You might feel like you will be very “gung ho” at the beginning so give yourself higher goals for then so that you will not have as much left at the end of the month. If you have other obligations such as those for work during part of the month then make it light for that time.
Make specific times to work on your novel for National Novel Writing Month
You might find it easier if you make a schedule of when you will work on your novel. Make it for a time when you will be free such as in the morning right when you get up.
Avoid distractions
While you are working you want to be as efficient as possible. It is best to avoid things that will usurp your time or cause you to lose focus like e-mail, the Internet, the phone, television, etc.
Even if you do not write the best novel you can, you will finish a novel if you are successful at National Novel Writing Month. It can help you get over writer’s block and set you to the path of being a writer. For more information, visit http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/whatisnano.
