Surveys can be very useful in helping a business hone its marketing strategy and even the products themselves. Of course, a survey is of no use if you do not get it back. Many companies struggle for ways to improve the response rate of their surveys. Consider the following techniques.
Give something in response for filling out a survey
A lot of companies improve their response rate by offering something for the survey. Of course, you might not be able to afford to give something very extravagant. One strategy is to give away coupons. For instance, Stride Rite offer $5 coupons for those who fill out a survey within 72 hours of their purchase. This gets people to do so right away. Coupons may also motivate the person to come back to your store and spend even more. Even with coupons, many of these stores still earn on their sales. You will also get the information about their particular purchase. You can also have marketing companies in the mall offer people a little money if they fill out a survey.
There are also a lot of online companies that offer surveys. For instance, at www.mypoints.com, there are many surveys that are distributed to the members. The people who take them get points but it works out to very little per survey so it should not cost the company a lot to do. There are other similar organizations.
Sometimes a company will offer to enter you in a contest if you respond to a survey. Because you are only giving out only one prize, this might not be expensive and can increase your response rate.
Make the surveys easy to fill out
A lot of businesses try to give out their surveys in an easy-to-use way. For instance, if you are on the phone with a company, they might have a phone survey immediately afterwards, and some may just stay on the line to fill it out. Also, many people offer online surveys, which is easy for a lot of people to fill out.
You also do not want the surveys to be too long. If you send out a survey that is five pages long, a lot of people will never touch it. The quicker it is, the more likely they might be to complete it, and you can still get valuable information.
You want your response rate for customer services to be as high as possible. Make sure to take into account how the responses may be skewed by any of these strategies.
