Toddlers and Vitamin Supplements

Parents are inundated with commercials and advertisements for vitamins aimed at toddlers; yet do toddlers truly need them? In most cases, the answer is no, if the parents properly feed the child. Various factors must be considered in this decision.
A toddler who eats a well-balanced diet filled with vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy products should get enough vitamins from natural sources, according to Web MD. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach are very important as are a variety of other healthy vegetables; this may include carrots, broccoli, kale, corn, green beans, lettuce and more. Fresh fruits such as apples, bananas, tomatoes and oranges provide additional vitamins.
Some parents think that they can give their children vitamin supplements and that will make up for not eating a diet full of healthy food. Numerous studies have shown that vitamin supplements are not as effective as getting the vitamins and minerals from natural sources. Most of the benefits are simply not seen.
In certain cases, vitamin supplements may be recommended for toddlers. This may include children who do not eat a lot of fruits and vegetables; but in many cases, the parents can get children to eat healthy if they try. They can give the child rewards for eating their vegetables, put them in appetizing forms or hide them in recipes. Some children simply eat very little and the doctor may suggest vitamins in those cases.
Some children who have various conditions or take certain medications may need vitamin supplements. Make certain to ask your child’s doctor before starting a vitamin if your child is in this group.
Children who have a restricted diet, such as a child who does not eat dairy, may need a supplement. The child may be on the restricted diet because of an allergy, intolerance or another such medical condition.. He or she may be lacking a certain nutrient found in the items he or she doesn’t eat. The child may be able to substitute other foods instead of a vitamin supplement, however.
There are various other reasons why a child might need a vitamin supplement. These might include a child who consumes a lot of carbonated sodas or is extremely active.
Even if a child does need a vitamin supplement, that does not mean that he or she needs a multi-vitamin with many different nutrients. A specific nutrient like iron may meet the child’s needs. What he or she needs will depend on what is lacking and why. Also, many nutritional supplements have far too much of the vitamin in it. Of course, remember that the needs of toddlers and adults differ greatly, so do not give a child a vitamin meant for an adult. Research what is safe for the child.
It is very important to talk to your child’s pediatrician before giving vitamin supplements. In most cases, it is not necessary when the parent takes the time and effort to give the child balanced meals.
