Why College is not just about Picking a Major

When you get to college you may face some pressure to pick a major. Of course, this is important, however college does not solely revolve around this decision.
The first thing to remember is that many people right now work outside of their major. It may be because they decided they wanted to do something else, because they had difficulty finding work in that major or because they just fell into a different line of work. Just because you have a major by no means signifies that you are locked into such a position for life. There may be other related fields – or a completely unrelated field – that ends up being the field that you go into. This can include jobs right after college as well as jobs further down the road.
There is a lot of other things that you can experience at college besides the academic. It is a time to become independent and learn about living on your own (for those who move from their parents home). It is a time to discover and explore the things that you are interested in. You may meet people whom you will know for many years down the road. There is also a lot of opportunities to network with people in different fields, no matter what your major is.
In a lot of jobs they do not care what major you have. They are just looking for a college degree. Also, after you get your first job, potential employers usually focus on your work experience. They will then care about what you have shown you can do in a real world setting rather than what you did in school. They may not even ask what your major was.
When searching for a job, the knowledge you have in a field is often considered much more important than your major. For instance, if someone has two candidates for a computer job and one was a computer major but not as knowledgeable and the other had a different major but had self-taught himself much more, then in all likelihood the employer is going to go for the one who knows more.
Many people change their majors several times in college. You should not feel like it is the “end all” or that you are making a decision that will necessarily change your life. In many majors you can take electives and also have the opportunity to explore other classes and other fields.
You want to consider your major carefully, but there is far more to college than this choice.
