(473 Words)
You may have strict requirements for the items that go into your child’s school lunch. You probably want generally healthy food. It has to be something that is easy for him or her to eat and which won’t spoil or make a mess. Of course you want him to like it or at least tolerate it enough to eat it. The following are some great items to put in these lunches.
Sandwiches
Of course many parents make a sandwich as the main dish for their child’s lunch. If you want a healthier option then choose 100% whole wheat bread instead of white bread. You can use peanut, almond or sunflower butter. If you use jelly, you can look for one that is healthier such as one made of 100% fruit. Of course there are many other sandwich options as well.
Mini-bagel
A lot of kids enjoy mini-bagels. You can also purchase little tubes or tubs of cream cheese from sources such as Target. Make sure that you include a cooler pack so that it stays cool.
Yogurt stick
Yogurt can be a healthy item. They make these in tubes. You can freeze them and by the time lunch arrives they will thaw out. The brand Go-gurt is one popular one. You can look for ones that are naturally flavored, chemical-free and lower in fat.
Fruit
Fruit is a wonderful item to give kids for their school lunches. Not only are they healthy but they are also generally easy to eat and kids like them. You can place some grapes in a bag. Apples are filled with many important nutrients. You could give your child a banana as long as it keeps well. You can cut up some melon or honeydew. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are also appreciated. You could also give your child a little cup of applesauce with a spoon. They also make applesauce in little pouches that the kids can easily eat. Many kids like dried fruit such as raisins, but be careful because some of the types have added sugar, which is not good for children.
Vegetables
Vegetables are an important part of a growing child’s diet. You can put in some carrot sticks (you can even buy these in individual packages). You can put in a Tupperware of corn, broccoli, carrots, green beans, etc. You can also include a little dip with the vegetables if you think they will be more likely to eat them.
Healthy drink
There are many sugary drinks that companies try to foist as healthy but which really aren’t. You may want to look for 100% juice items. You can also get milk in shelf stable containers.
You want your kids to enjoy lunch, and they may like the above items. Try to include a variety of items every day for a balanced diet.
