Depressive stage
When you are in the depression part of manic-depressive disorder you might have trouble doing your work. Many people get so sad or upset that they cannot even bring themselves to go to work. If you stop showing up for work, obviously you can lose your job. Even if you are there you might have difficulty concentrating or getting anything done. If you have trouble performing, then again you could get in trouble or even get fired for not performing the work. You might just appear withdrawn and sad and have trouble interacting with your co-workers. They may see that something is wrong and not understand what. You may be passed over for promotions for people who seem more stable. If you do get fired, then it may make it more difficult to find another job. You might not be able to get a recommendation and might have to try to explain to new employers what happened.
Manic stage
Some people actually get some things done with regards to their career when they are manic. They may just work work work, but they may end up burning themselves out. Others will just blow off work and might go out and spend a ton of money or do something irresponsible such as just leave work to go on a long road trip . You may just go from one thing to the next without a break and act very hyper. People at work might notice that you are very hyper and it may look bad upon you. They may be uncomfortable and you can lose your job. You also might end up crashing at a point. Again, losing your job over this can be difficult to explain to a potential new employer.
When you have manic-depressive disorder and go back and forth between a depressive and manic stage, it can be detrimental to your career overall. Employers want someone that they can count on and even if you get a ton of work down at times, if you can just switch at any given moment they may be hesitant to keep or promote you. Some people find that they have to restart their careers every time it happens. It is important to get treatment for this disorder because you may be able to get it under control and regain your life and career.
