How to Prepare for College while still in High School
It takes quite a bit to prepare for college, and it is best if you start while you are still in high school. There is quite a bit you can do even while in school, including the following.
Learn about the college
If you already know where you are going to college, then you might want to learn as much about it beforehand as you can. For instance, a lot of colleges such as the University of Florida are very large and have tens of thousands of students. They have many different places on their campuses. If you can learn about the layout of the campus, then it might make it easier once you start. If you are not sure of what you want to study, then you can try to learn about the different classes and majors. You can even do research into specific professors.
There is a lot of other things to learn about a college. You can learn about extracurricular activities and clubs you might want to join. If you think you want to rush then you can learn about the sororities and fraternities. There may be a lot of information online about the college or you can talk to people you know who are alumni.
If you are going to a new town, then you can also learn about your new surroundings. Learn about the attractions such as the movie theaters. Learn about the stores and where you might want to shop.
Start to learn how to be independent
If you are going away to school, then quite a bit more will change than just your classes. You may have to prepare meals for yourself, do your laundry, do the cleaning, etc. You can start to learn about these things while you are still in high school (if you do not already know how to do them). Practice making some meals or doing your own laundry. The more familiar you are with being independent, the less you will feel a “shock” as these things change.
Think about what you want to bring
Everything might be a whirlwind right before you actually go to college. You do not want to rush into the decision on what to bring right as you are going away. Especially if you are going to a tiny dorm room, you may have to make do on much less. You can make a list of items that you want to bring.
You will also likely need to buy some new items for college. You might need a microwave, a television, organizational tools, laundry supplies, etc. You can start to make a list of these and even start to buy some things so that you are not in a rush at the end.
Prepare for the classes
Many college classes start very quickly. You do not want to be lost. Make sure that you are solid in these subjects.
There is a lot you can do to prepare for college while still in high school. Getting as much as possible done in advance may make for an easier transition.
