Single Parents Tips on Running a Business
Running a business is a full time job as is being a single parent. So how do you do both? Consider the following helpful strategies.
Make dedicated time for both your children and the business
It can be difficult to run your business if you are dealing with your kids and difficult to parent if you are worrying about your business. If possible, you might want to try to dedicate some specific time to your business when your children are otherwise occupied such as when they are in school. If you have no choice in this, such as if they are too young for school, then try to come up with fun, educational activities such as crafts they can do. If your business is outside of the house, then set up an area for them there. Also, even if you do not have the money for a nanny, you might be able to hire a neighborhood kid to come around as a mother’s helper to play with the kids while you are engaged in the running of the business.
When you are working on your business, it is important to focus. You may be worried about everything from A to Z with your kids, but try to focus on your business if you can. Likewise, make sure your children get your undivided attention at times as well.
Be organized
When running a business as a single parent, it is important to be organized. Keep good files. Use computer systems to keep track of things. Above all, make sure your files and important information are away from the children’s reach!
Get help
If you can afford it, you might want to see if you can get some help with your business. When you are a single parent, you have a lot of responsibilities to your children, and for most they will have to come first. If you are running a store, see if you can get a little part time help. Just hiring an assistant for a few hours a day might have a profound effect on both you and your business.
Take care of yourself
With children and the business likely residing in the number one and two spot on the priority list, it may seem like you do not have any time leftover. If at all possible, try to make some time to take care of yourself. You will not be able to take care of everyone else if you are mentally or physically exhausted. Therefore you should take steps to eat healthy, get a decent amount of sleep, exercise and (gasp!) get in a little free time to yourself. Try to find this balance in your life.
Although it can be difficult to run a business while parenting on your own, it can be done. The above tips may aid you in your endeavor.
