A dramaturge or dramaturg works within a theater company to help bring quality plays to life. According to Associate Artist James Magruder at Baltimore Centerstage, it can be described as the “bridge between page and stage”. The duties of a dramaturge can range depending on the size of the theater group and the other resources and positions available. Generally, they aid in the research and development of the productions. They may place plays into categories and will not only aid in the production of a single play, but also in finding a connected theme for the season. Specific duties may include the following.
Research
A dramaturge wants to ensure that the play is an accurate representation of the work of the playwright. If the play is taking part in the past as so many do, then he or she will do research to help create background settings that are accurate. He or she may help in costume selection as well (although this is not a primary duty). A dramaturge may perform a great deal of research to ensure the accuracy of the play.
Working with playwrights
Some dramaturges choose to work with those that write the plays. They may help playwrights bring their plays to life and ensure historical accuracy. Not all plays will work for all setting, theaters and productions, and a dramaturge can help playwrights adapt their plays for versatility.
Hiring decisions
A great deal of the quality of a play will depend on the quality of the actors, technical staff and other players in the production. The dramaturge will often play a large part in the selection of these professionals. In small companies without casting professionals, they may perform the entirety of this role. In lager companies they may provide an advisory role.
Play development
A dramaturge will often help to put together an entire season for a company. The company will often want to offer a connection amongst their plays, and a dramaturge can help them with play choices to ensure this. Once a play is selected, he or she may help with the editing or adaption of it.
Working with others
A dramaturge’s job is not a solitary one. He or she will typically work with the director, serving as a source of knowledge. He or she can almost take on the voice of the playwright. Sometimes he or she will work directly with the actors. They may interact with the public as well, providing interesting information about plays. A dramaturge can work to educate through written or oral material about the history of the play or the time itself.
A dramaturge can play a pivotal role in a dramatic company. The plays and how they are performed will be highly influenced by the skill of this professional. One may work for a particular company or as a consultant for companies that cannot afford to hire one full time. It is an exciting job that can bring great fulfillment.
