Tips on being a Great Father in Law

(404 Words)
Fathers can have a difficult time letting go of their children when they walk down the aisle to start a life of wedded bliss. When you make the effort to be a great father-in-law, you can forge a positive bond with your child and their new family.
Do not be overbearing
As a father, you may be used to playing a large role in your child’s life. You may have been the one he or she always came to for advice. Now your child’s life is evolving, and he or she may not come to you as much as in the past. It is vital to accept your new role and understand that he or she loves you no less.
Do not insert your advice into every part of their business, especially if they have told you they want space. Give advice as it is needed and requested. Do not tell them how to run their household, care for their children, etc. Even if you do not agree with every decision they make, be supportive.
Welcome your new “daughter” or “son”
You want to make your child’s spouse feel like a part of the family. Even if you feel like no one could ever be good enough for your “baby,” you can learn to care for your daughter-in-law or son-in-law as well. Try to find common subjects that you both like. For instance, if you both like golf, then see if he wants to go out and play a few rounds with you. Show that you are interested in him or her.
Be helpful
Your child’s family may need help at times. It may be something simple such as an airport pickup or something more complicated such as help painting a house. Offer your services whenever possible. Show that you want to be there for them.
Watch what you say
Do not make fun of your child’s spouse (or of your child). What you say in jest may be hurtful. When you talk about your son-in-law or daughter-in-law, ABC Rural suggests to stay positive. Try to stay away from subjects that are controversial between the two of them. Your place is not in the middle. Stay out of their arguments and instead provide a support system for both.
With the right actions you can be an excellent father-in-law. Your relationship will be positive for all parties as you enjoy the new role you play.
