(425 Words)
There are many baby items that you can buy secondhand and save a bundle of money, such as clothing and toys. There is one item that you should never ever buy secondhand, however, no matter how much you save: a car seat. Buying a used car seat is extremely dangerous and can place your child in peril every time you drive the car. There are multiple reasons for this.
You may not get all the parts
Child car seats have many internal and external parts. A part may have been removed or taken off of the cars eat, and this may be impossible for you to discern simply from a visual inspection. It may be a vital part that is important for it to work correctly.
It may have been in a crash
A car seat involved in any crash, even a minor one, should be discarded. Most of the makers of car seats recommend discarding car seats after an accident. In protecting a child during a crash, the seat can get damaged. Again, the damage is not always visible to the naked eye, however it can prevent the car seat from working correctly in the future. If you buy the car seat used, you will not know for sure if it was in a crash.
It may be expired
Car seats actually expire and should be discarded after that date. The plastic in the car seat can become brittle as time passes. This weakens it, and it may not stay together as it should in the case of an accident.
It will not have the latest technology or meet the latest standards
Fortunately, car seats tend to get stronger and better as time passes. New technology allows manufacturers to make stronger seats that are easier to use and install. An older seat will not have the latest technology. In addition, as more information becomes available, car seat standards and laws change. You may have a seat that would not meet today’s more rigorous standards.
You will probably not have the installation instructions
Car seats can be very tricky to install correctly. Without the instructions, this is even more unlikely, and this can place your child in a dangerous situation. Also, many car seats get recalled.
For a variety of reasons, buying a secondhand car seat is not recommended. There are many areas where you can save, but parents should avoid this one. It is not worth the danger to the child. Instead, look for deals and compare prices on a new, safe car seat.
